CLEAN WATER ACCESS FOR MARGINALIZED COMMUNITY PROJECT (CLAM Project)

Location: Dupka Community, Gwagwalada, FCT Abuja.

Partners: Sukhi 222, Local community leaders, municipal Council

Funded

Access to safe and clean water remains a critical challenge in many vulnerable Nigerian communities. With support from Sukhi 222, Step-Up Green Climate Warriors Initiative implemented the Community-Led Access to Water Management (CLAM) Project, installing Sawyer Water filters and pipe-borne water systems in remote, hard-to-reach areas plagued by chronic water shortages.
This intervention significantly eased the daily burden on women and girls who previously walked long distances to fetch water. It also led to improved school attendance and a marked reduction in water-borne diseases. Sukhi 222’s funding enabled not just infrastructure, but also vital outreach, raising awareness on water conservation, hygiene practices, and local water governance.
By emphasizing that water is a right, not a privilege, the project sparked a sense of ownership within the communities. Residents were engaged in maintaining and protecting the water systems, ensuring the long-term sustainability of this life-changing initiative.
Together with Sukhi 222, we are turning access into empowerment, one community at a time.

The campaign triggered local government attention in several wards, leading to discussions around equitable water infrastructure and WASH budget transparency. Our advocacy efforts encouraged citizens to demand accountability and reinforced the need for urgent climate-resilient water solutions.

The campaign was not just about physical clean-up; it served as a platform for environmental education, behavior change, and youth civic engagement. The initiative boosted environmental consciousness in the communities, reduced flooding from blocked drainages, and created a ripple effect as residents began replicating clean-up activities monthly.

Through storytelling, debates, and creative art sessions, girls shared their lived experiences of climate-induced hardships, especially how climate shocks lead to early marriage and school dropouts. The event led to the creation of a Girls’ Climate Leadership Circle in Abuja, equipping young girls with the tools to advocate for their rights and influence climate action plans at the local level.

ENHANCING COMMUNITY RESILIENCE TO FLOODING AND COASTAL EROSION THROUGH INCLUSIVE AND GENDER-SENSITIVE STRATEGIES

Location: Kogi State

ONGOING PROJECT

Funded

Kogi State experiences severe annual flooding due to its location at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers. The 2022 floods affected over 2.5 million people, with Kogi among the worst-hit states. Women, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and low-income groups face the greatest challenges, including difficulty in evacuation, increased displacement, and higher risks of gender-based violence. Coastal erosion further threatens riverbank communities, leading to land and livelihood losses. This project aims to strengthen flood preparedness and response through inclusive, gender-sensitive strategies. It will provide flood preparedness training tailored to the needs of women and PWDs, develop crisis strategies that ensure their representation, and mobilize youth to clear blocked waterways and promote environmental conservation.

In a move to advance water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) solutions for vulnerable communities, Step-Up Green Climate Warriors Initiative paid a courtesy visit to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development in Abuja.
During the high-level meeting with Hon. Minister Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, we explored collaborative strategies to improve water access under the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP). This gesture underscores our belief that water is a basic human right, not a privilege. With one in four people globally living in water-scarce areas, the time for bold action is now. The Sawyer filters present a scalable, low-cost solution to strengthen school WASH systems and protect children’s health.
